The difference between a cut-to-length line and a leveling machine

Many people wonder what the difference is between a cut-to-length (CTL) line and a leveling machine, as they seem quite similar. In this article, the editorial team at Dongfang Machinery will explain the distinctions in detail.


The steel plate CTL machine is one of the most commonly used metal processing machines in manufacturing. However, it is sometimes used in combination with other equipment. After being processed by a CTL machine, steel plates are flattened into sheets, which are referred to as "CTL sheets" or "cut-to-length sheets."

Leveling Machine Function: A leveling machine is designed to flatten uneven metal sheets by passing them through upper and lower rollers that apply compressive pressure to achieve a flat surface. Typically, leveling machines are configured with either four upper and five lower rollers, or three upper and four lower rollers, with feed roller shafts positioned at the front and rear. The upper section is equipped with a handwheel for fine adjustment of the leveling thickness and precision.

A CTL line, on the other hand, is generally used in steel markets where wide coils are flattened and sheared into standardized sheets or smaller coils through the CTL machine. A leveling machine — also known as a straightening machine — is similar to a CTL machine in that both use the rolling action of upper and lower roller shafts to flatten uneven areas of coils or sheets. Their working principles are essentially the same. The key difference is that a CTL machine is significantly larger and includes a shearing unit. A CTL machine constitutes an entire production line, whereas a leveling machine is just one process within that line.

CTL sheets tend to have relatively high levels of internal stress, resulting in poor dimensional stability. Depending on the process parameters used during CTL machine operation, the internal stress distribution varies, leading to different load-bearing capacities in different directions perpendicular to the sheet length. Moreover, this load-bearing capacity is difficult to measure using standard strength indicators. As a result, CTL sheets are prone to significant welding distortion, which is very difficult to correct.
